The University
The Theological Univeristy was founded in 1854. The University consists of only one department: Theology. (In Dutch the word Universiteit is used for any academic institution, even if it consists of only one faculty). It grants all academic degrees, including the doctorate. However, the primary goal of the university is the training for ministry in the Reformed Churches (Liberated). To avoid confusion it is important to know that there is another theological institution in Kampen, called the Protestants Theologische Universiteit.

University of the churches
The university serves the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands (Liberated), which have approximately 125.000 members. Ecclesiastical relationships exists with other reformed churches in Europe, the US, Canada, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan,. Indonesia and Korea.

The educational experience
The faculty counts eight professors, six university lecturers and six AIO's (PhD students employed by the university). With about 80 students enrolled, the faculty-student ratio is ideal. The University is recognized by the Dutch government on account of the quality of its teaching and research. The Bachelor of Theology takes three years, and there is a one year Master program and a three year Master program (ministry preparation). The Biblical languages are an important element in the curriculum.

Surroundings
The university is located in a historical town, between Amsterdam and Groningen, not far from Zwolle. The town lies on the bank of the IJssel River and features many historic buildings and cultural attractions. The university buildings are conveniently situated in the center of the town. The university's library has almost 150.000 volumes in its possession.

Admission
Students from outside the denomination are admitted when they are willing to respect the confessional standard of the university: the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism and the Canons of Dordt.

International Students
The University welcomes applications for all levels of academic study. The university is particularly suited for students who have a Master of Theology degree and wish to complete their studies with a Ph.D. Course instruction is mainly given in Dutch, but in special circumstances the English languages can be used. Papers and theses can be written in English, German or French. The University is also member of the European University Charter 'Erasmus' for student exchange.
